1990/91 : RUSSIA

My interest in Russia dates back over 30 years, when my wife and I participated in a National Academy of Sciences post-doctoral exchange program. This was during the height of the Cold War, and it seemed like the chance for normal relations with the good people of Russia would never come. As "Perestroika" began to change the world order in 1990, I was with a small group of American volcanologists who were the first foreign visitors to the volcano-rich Kamchatka Peninsula since World War II. We were warmly welcomed by our previously isolated Russian colleagues, and spent an unforgettable summer visiting famous volcanoes such as BEZYMYANII, KARYMSKII and KLYUCHEVSKII. After leaving Pinatubo in 1991 I traveled again to Kamchatka, and worked on GORELLY and MUTNOVSKII volcanoes.
