This was the year the village of Kalapana was destroyed by
Kilauea
lava flows, and I was distressed that discussions of the lava diversion option to
protect the area were not allowed for consideration by authorities. I felt
that HVO's motto "Ne Plus Haustae et Obrutae Urbes" (No more shall cities be
destroyed - - written in 1911 by Thomas Jaggar) {HVO logo} had been
forgotten. When a volcanic crisis developed on
ANATAHAN volcano, I
gratefully left Hawaii and the destruction in Puna with an HVO team for the
Northern Marianas. People had already been evacuated from Anatahan when we
arrived, so we monitored volcanic earthquakes and mapped the island as the
crisis subsided.
